Hayes Co. Sheriff Dept. - worn during the 1990 -? - new condition - Last Buffalo Hunt - After President Ulysses S. Grant announced that Grand Duke Alexis of Russia would be making a trip through the United States and wanted to shoot a buffalo during his visit, arrangements were made. The hunt took place in January 1872. A herd of buffalo was spotted by scouts and the Sioux near Medicine Creek. Duke Alexis had shot two pistols empty in an unsuccessful attempt to kill a buffalo. Buffalo Bill Cody then loaned him a .50 caliber Springfield rifle, and with one shot the Grand Duke killed a bull buffalo. By the end of the hunt, Duke Alexis had killed a total of eight buffalo.
