Summit Co. Sheriffs Dept. - new condition - The sheriff’s office was established in 1861 and Ruben J. Spaulding, a gold prospector, became the first Sheriff. The sheriffs and their wives at times occupied the apartment in the northeast corner of the old courthouse in the basement, next to the jail's boiler room. Prisoners were picked up for dinner by the janitor, usually accompanied by a commissioner, sheriff, or assessor. No escapes were reported from this practice, which lasted until the mid-19th century.
