Sheriff Frank McBride and a 3-man posse attempted to arrest the Power family at their remote cabin in the Galiuro Mountains for draft evasion. As they approached at dawn, a gunfight broke out. Sheriff McBride, Undersheriff Martin Kempton, and Deputy Kane Wootan were killed. Jeff Power was fatally wounded. The Power brothers, Tom and John, and their friend Tom Sisson fled but were captured nearly a month later by the U.S. Cavalry in New Mexico. They were convicted of murder and sentenced to life. The brothers were paroled in 1960 and later pardoned. The site of the shootout, the Power Cabin, is now a historic landmark.
