Essex Co. Sheriffs Dept - new condition - 1930s-early 60s - Special Deputy Sheriffs (SDS). Back then a sheriff would hand out SDS badges and IDs to friends, relatives and political supporters. The badges held no police powers. They were shown to get courtesy if you were pulled over etc. The practice came under scrutiny in 1935 after the murder of mobster Dutch Schultz in Newark NJ. He and a few of his henchmen were gunned down in a restaurant. One of the henchmen had a SDS badge
