They assist in numerous functions such as patrol, event security, responding to disaster scenes, and assist in special operations such as roadside safety checks, drug collections at Department of Health, and volunteer to add additional uniformed bodies for special events. Sangamon Co. Sheriff - Corrections - used condition - The Sangamon County Jail was opened in October 1991 and can hold a maximum of 314 inmates. Depending on the security level, inmates are housed in a dormitory-style area for releasees and trustees to single cells for maximum security inmates. The jail houses three types of inmates: those awaiting bail or trial, those sentenced to serve a prison term, and those being held for other authorities. Sangamon Co. Sheriff - TRU - used condition - The Tactical Response Unit was implemented in 1975. Members of the TRU are also a part of the City/County Weapons of Mass Destruction Special Response Team. This joint team may respond anywhere in Illinois in the event of a terrorist attack or natural disaster.
