Ouachita Parish Sheriffs Dept. - new condition - The first sheriff , George Hoof, was appointed in 1705. The first legal hanging in Ouachita Parish was in October of 1822. A man named Russell Brooks was convicted of murdering the man who stole his horse, so he was hanged from an oak branch on the courthouse lawn. In 1855 when gold was discovered out west, many citizens left Ouachita Parish. During this time, the "Frontier Marshal" was introduced to help the sheriff. The Frontier Marshal assisted the sheriff with enforcing the law.
